Well, my third attempt at redtail fairyshrimp has ended the same way as the last two. All seems to be going well until suddenly the whole colony crashes! I've tried different temperatures, different light schedules, different feeding schedules, water changes... I'm at a loss. Has anyone else had this issue?
This last attempt was actually a surprise. I had used up all the sand from my fairyshrimp pack, and went on to add a pack of seedshrimp and daphnia to try instead. Adding the second pack seemed to wake up a ton of previously unhatched fairyshrimp. The weirdest part is that although the fairyshrimp colony crashed, the other shrimp colonies in the tank are fine! Bitter sweet and strange.

I have had this exact situation you describe happen countless times as well. It's truly baffling. With artemia too. And even more unexplainable is when the very same water that hosted a healthy, thriving colony can kill the next generation without any changes to condition. So strange.
I've been experimenting with buffers of late; using things like peat or clay in the water to more accurately duplicate the types of minerals abundant in their natural environments. It's a bit too early to tell for sure but so far I'm noticing pretty good results. It's been seeming like the "uglier" the water (clouded/ murky) the stronger the colony. Not sure what good that's doing when you can't actually observe what you've got, but no denying their growth and success rates. More to follow!
